Date:
Our next DMI IDEA Book Club book for discussion on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at Noon on Zoom, will be ‘The Lion Women of Tehran’ by Marjan Kamali- 352 pages
Thank you, Charlie Berthoud, Pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church, for this recommendation…
“This is a fantastic book. It’s a story of two Iranian women living through the transition from the tyranny of the Shah to the tyranny of the Ayatollah. It’s a beautiful and powerful story of friendship, kindness, and courage. Historical fiction at its best gives you a compelling story in a specific time/context, and it helps the reader learn more about the time and context. Now is a pretty darn good time to learn about Iran and the struggles ordinary people, especially women, have faced for decades. In terms of readability, the book has just a few well-developed main characters, and the author does a nice job of subtly revisiting previous scenes and themes, making it easy to follow the flow. So, if you’ve never tried historical fiction or if you haven’t read a novel in while, this a great place to start.”
