The Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice Visits Access to Independence
Over the past several months, from March through November of 2024, the red, white, and blue flag-wrapped Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice has been traversing the country, stopping in cities and towns along the way, many of which are important to disability history.
The goal of the caravan is to shine a light on all that has gone before by honoring and celebrating people and places significant to their 100-plus year struggle for freedom and justice. They hope to do this by sharing stories that connect people to their rich history of activism and advocacy and its relevance to current national, regional, and local issues.
Along the 20,000-mile route, each stop will connect with local disability-related organizations, at which the Caravan will collaborate with local hosts to share a message that encourages civic engagement, raises awareness of current issues facing the disability community, and works to organize a national approach to address these issues.
Access to Independence will host one of these stops on July 18th from 3-6pm at the Access to Independence office, 3810 Milwaukee St., Madison, WI 53714. Join them for light refreshments, tabling by a few local disability organizations, and brief remarks from area legislators and county executive candidates.
