Economic Development

Economic development is imperative for increasing the tax base, supporting the downtown infrastructure and creating a vital and healthy downtown, city and region. A economically strong downtown is attractive for businesses and provides employment opportunities and resources for people to live, work and play in our city.

DMI continues to work closely with City of Madison officials, the private-sector and many partners on strategies and initiatives to promote economic development efforts in the downtown. Issues and activities have involved monitoring major development projects, advocating for changes to the City of Madison's development review process, producing a Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) white paper and City of Madison Landmark’s Ordinance white paper, working to promote development and parking options in the Capitol East District, partnering with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, supporting greater housing densities and diversity, and participating in the development of the City of Madison Economic Development Strategy.
