DESCRIPTION:Our next book is ‘Angels in the Rye\,’ a 2018 novel by the Wisconsin author- Marsha Martin-Yates\, as recommended by our friend- Peter Gray. \nhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52390074-angels-in-the-rye \nWe selected ‘Angels in the Rye’ because: \n-It fits thematically with our book group’s focus on inclusiveness and diverse stories. \n-It is a novel by a Wisconsin author: Marsha Martin-Yates\, who lives in Sturgeon Bay. \n-The book is being made into a movie\, which we may have a later opportunity to watch. \nUnfortunately\, the Madison/Dane County Library systems do not have copies of the book\, so we need to purchase it. DESCRIPTION:overview:\nFor our next ‘book club’ discussion we will be discussing the play ‘Ironbound’ by  Martyna Majok. \n“The play ‘Ironbound’ is about a Polish immigrant woman- Darya. She has come to America with her husband Maks\, when they are both still young\, in their early 20’s. They come seeking the American dream\, a better life\, a home\, stability\, a comfortable living. What they get is hardship\, strain on their relationship\, and broken dreams. ‘Ironbound’ is an amazingly good script\, and deceptively challenging. With immigration issues roiling our culture\, with women continuing to fight for equity and agency\, with the struggles of just getting by in life not seeming to get any easier\, this seems to be an excellent vehicle for a Frank Theater production.” Mary Aalgaard \nAt our book club meeting on Tuesday\, Jan. 13th at Noon\,  we will have a pre-viewing discussion about this play. DESCRIPTION:This book club has been meeting for about four years now\, reading a variety of books. \nThis month the group will discuss these 7 questions about the book: ‘Between the World and Me’ by Ta-Nehisi Coates. \n\nHow would you describe the overall tone of Between the World and Me? What emotions are expressed by Coates in his writing\, and what emotions did you feel while reading it?\nDiscuss the title of the book and what Coates may have meant by it.\nThe book is written in the form of a letter from Coates to his 15-year-old son\, Samori. Why do you think Coates chose to structure the book in this way? How did this format affect your reading?\nThe book was written in 2015\, shortly after the police officer responsible for the death of Michael Brown was exonerated of charges. What comparisons can you draw between that time and now? What has changed since then?\nOne broad concept that Coates introduces is that of “the Dream” and “Dreamers.” What do you understand these terms to mean? Why does Coates argue that he and other Black people are cut off from “the Dream”?\nDiscuss Coates’s definition of race\, and how it relates to racism.\nWhat surprised you most about the book?
