Regional Transportation

Today our transportation system carries thousands of residents, workers and visitors to, from and throughout the downtown area. As our population continues to grow, good regional decisions on land use and transportation are needed to maintain a high level of environmental quality and to grow economic opportunities for our entire region. An integrated regional transportation system could include expanded metro bus service, bus rapid transit (BRT), commuter rail, park and ride lots, and bicycle, pedestrian and road infrastructure improvements.

DMI has and continues to work with City of Madison staff, local officials, Madison Metro and many partners on issues, plans and projects involving regional transportation. Activities and initiatives have included supporting Madison Metro and efforts to develop a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, monitoring the Sustainable Madison Transportation Master Plan/Madison in Motion, advocating for transit funding from the State of Wisconsin and for the creation of a Regional Transit Authority (RTA) that would allow our region to invest efficiently in our transportation needs.
