Edgewater Redevelopment

What is It?

The Edgewater redevelopment is a project that has been proposed by the Hammes company to renovate and expand the existing Edgewater Hotel, a Madison landmark. The completed project will restore the original Art Moderne building, expand public amenities and access to Lake Mendota, and add a vertical expansion of hotel rooms. The project was approved by the City of Madison Common Council on May 19th, 2010. Construction will begin in late 2010 and is slated to be completed in 2012.

Why is it Important?

The Edgewater redevelopment will greatly benefit downtown businesses, residents and visitors. It is a $107 million dollar investment in a historic Madison site that will improve public access to the lakefront, provide luxury hotel rooms and meeting space in close proximity to the Monona Terrace, Overture Center, and the UW Campus; add retail and dining amenities; and additional parking to a historic neighborhood close to the capitol square.

The project will also expand TID 32 to the Mansion Hill and James Madison Park area, which will allow for the city to invest TIF resources into the area to preserve some of the historic homes and buildings located within the district.

What is DMI's Role?

DMI supported the Edgewater proposal throughout the city approval process due to the economic development benefits listed above. DMI worked closely with elected officials, city staff, and project supporters to educate and advocate for the project and for the use of TIF funds. We will continue to closely monitor the project as it goes through the last hurdles of approval and into its construction and completion.
