Regional Transit Authority
What is it?
The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is an entity that plans for and manages mass transit and transportation solutions for the Madison region within the Metropolitan Planning Organization's boundaries. The RTA board is made up of representatives from Madison, Dane County and the surrounding towns and villages. Funding for the RTA will be determined by a referendum that will be held by the MPO. The date for the referendum has not yet been determined.
Why is it important?
The creation of the RTA allows for mass transit, like Madison Metro, to expand its services boundaries beyond municipal borders and serve a larger population of transit users. The RTA plans around current and future transportation needs to preserve Madison's quality of life.
What is DMI's role?
DMI has been at the table from the very beginning to advocate for the creation of the RTA. In early 2010 DMI's president, Susan Schmitz, was appointed by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz to represent the City of Madison on the RTA board. The DMI Transportation & Parking committee continues to monitor and weigh in on issues that effect the RTA and the upcoming referendum.
